How did that ride feel? Should we back off Thursday’s intervals? Are you actually going to hit target before Saturday’s group ride? Every coach asks questions like these, and every athlete waits to hear back. Where that conversation happens is supposed to be beside the point. In practice, it’s rarely beside the point at all — it happens in a text thread, an email, a different platform entirely, while the training data it’s actually about sits somewhere else.
We didn’t think that was good enough. So we rebuilt how coaches and athletes talk to each other inside Xert, and we built it around a simple idea: the conversation should live next to the data it’s about, and it should reach you wherever you actually are — including WhatsApp.
Where the Conversation Now Lives
Direct messages with your coach or your athletes, and every comment thread you’re part of, now live in one place — a Messages hub with two tabs, one inbox. No more hunting across activities trying to remember where a conversation happened.
That’s the easy part. The part we actually cared about is this: a comment doesn’t have to live in a generic chat window anymore. You can comment directly on a specific activity, or on a specific day on the calendar. A question about Tuesday’s intervals lives on Tuesday’s activity, not buried somewhere in a scrolling thread with everything else you’ve discussed this month. When your coach opens that ride six weeks from now, the conversation about it is still right there.

A Real Messaging Toolkit
Once we decided messages needed to live next to training data, it followed that they needed to behave like messages people actually use. React, reply, forward, pin, edit, delete — the things you already expect from any modern messaging app are now available on every coach-athlete conversation and every comment thread. Attach a file if you need to, but you can also attach an actual activity or workout, and it renders as a live card right in the conversation: route map, duration, distance, difficulty, strain breakdown. Your coach doesn’t need a link and a second tab open to know what you’re talking about. And read receipts mean you know your athlete actually saw the note before race day, instead of wondering.

WhatsApp, Two-Way
This is the piece that mattered most to us. Connect WhatsApp once, and every Xert message or comment gets relayed to your phone — reply right from WhatsApp, and it syncs straight back into Xert. Your coach doesn’t need to open an app to answer you. You don’t need to open an app to ask.
We didn’t want the other app to be the price of staying reachable. If your coach already lives in WhatsApp — and most people already do — Xert should meet them there instead of asking them to add one more inbox to their day.

How This Compares
We looked at what the two platforms most likely to come up in this conversation — TrainingPeaks and intervals.icu — actually ship today.
| TrainingPeaks | intervals.icu | Xert | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct coach-athlete messaging | Yes — but Premium-only for both coach and athlete, and gated to users 18+ with a birthdate on file | Yes, via Chat — built around group/team messaging | Yes — 1:1 between coach and athlete |
| Comments tied to a specific activity or day | Separate “post-workout comments” feature, apart from messaging | Not a headline feature; athletes have asked for something more structured | Built in — comment threads live on the activity or calendar day itself |
| Centralized inbox for all conversations | Split across messaging and comments | Chat is its own area | One Messages hub — Direct Messages and Comments in two tabs |
| Attach an activity or workout as a live card | Not documented | Workout/screenshot sharing, not a rendered data card | Yes — full stats card with map, difficulty, and strain |
| Message actions (react, edit, pin, forward, delete) | Not documented | Not documented | Yes, on every message |
| Reach the conversation outside the app | No — stays inside TrainingPeaks’ own apps | No third-party relay documented | WhatsApp, two-way sync |
The pattern with the other two is the same: the conversation is another tab to check, in another app, and on TrainingPeaks specifically, it’s a Premium add-on with an age gate before either side can even use it. Coaches on both platforms still end up falling back to text messages, email, or WhatsApp on the side, which is exactly the fragmentation an all-in-one coaching platform is supposed to remove. Xert doesn’t ask you to stop using WhatsApp. It plugs into it.
Where You Come In
If you coach on Xert, or you’re one of their coached athletes, you’ll find a Messages link in the top nav. Open it, connect WhatsApp, and the relay starts working today.
Is your coach still messaging you through TrainingPeaks or intervals.icu? Send them this post. Switching to Xert Messaging means one less app for both of you to check, comments that stay attached to the actual ride instead of getting lost in a chat log, and a WhatsApp bridge neither of those platforms offers.
And messaging isn’t the only reason to make the move. Xert 2.0 is a full universal metabolic model — phosphocreatine, muscle glycogen, blood glucose, and fueling — built directly from the ride data your coach already has, no lab test required. Between that and a messaging system built for how the two of you actually work, there’s never been a better time to ask your coach to switch.
Have feedback on the new messaging experience? Comment threads reach us the same way they reach your coach — we’re watching.
