Once Max Power is added to the activities table, you can select it to sort by highest to lowest – search for activities that have unusually high max power. This data is usually easy to spot when looking at the MPA analysis of the activity. In the example provided below, we can see that the reported power during this activity is often well over 1000 W. For Xert’s analysis to work optimally, invalid data like this should be addressed. We will discuss how you can ‘clean’ your data further into this article.

Xert does automate some invalid data detection, and will automatically flag activities with unrealistic power data. This can include rides where the power data was invalid for any reason – low battery, lack of calibration, etc. Flagging activities can also be useful to override changes to your signature from Breakthrough or Near Breakthrough activities.

Flagging an activity tells Xert not to adjust your signature from the power data during the activity. Xert will still calculate Focus & XSS, so your activity will still contribute towards Xert’s Adaptive Training Advisor. It’s important to note that flagging an older activity will result in a trickle-down, where all activities that have occurred since then will also be recalculated.

How to Flag an Activity

If you suspect that your activity has data that isn’t valid or reproducible for day to day training, you should flag the activity to prevent your signature from being inflated. You can flag an activity from several different places in Xert, including the Activity Details Page, the Activities Table, & the Activities Dashboard:

Once you have a copy of the original fit file, you can then remove the faulty activity from Xert.

For bike computers, consult your user’s manual on accessing your .fit files.

For apps like Zwift, Rouvy, Road Grand Tours, etc., your activity files should be saved locally onto your computer. If not, you should also be able to access the file from the app’s website.

A data spike is a short (usually <5s) reading from your Power Meter or Heart Rate monitor which is far higher than the highest power or highest Heart Rate you can actually achieve. For example, if your latest activity shows a maximum recorded power of 2000 W on your latest ride, but your Peak Power in Xert is only 850 W, the 2000 W reading is likely an erroneous power spike. While Xert does employ some safeguards to prevent these short power spikes from skewing your data, sometimes they need to be manually removed.

To do this, take your original .fit file from Xert, navigate to fitfiletools.com and select the Peak Remover Tool. Drag or select the .fit file with the power spike and select the ‘Power’ option. Next, enter your Peak Power under the ‘Remove Values Above’ option and select ‘Go!’. Download and save the corrected file, remove the faulty activity in Xert and upload the corrected file to replace it!

Some power meters will overestimate power readings when battery levels are critically low. Other times, power meters can read artificially high when they haven’t been recently calibrated. In either way, severely overestimated power data can negatively impact your fitness signature in Xert – typically by inflating your HIE or Peak Power values. An example of this is shown below. If your power data looks like this, we recommend completely removing the power data from the data file and letting Xert’s Heart Rate Derived Metrics estimate the Focus & XSS of the ride.

This is often caused by another (non-Xert) ConnectIQ data field trying to access background services, which causes the display on our App to freeze. Note that the data recording is unaffected – only the screen is frozen.

To resolve this, you can try a couple of options:

Create a new Garmin Profile that doesn’t have any ConnectIQ data fields installed. Switch to this blank/empty profile before launching the Xert Workout Player.

Alternatively, you can remove any non-Xert ConnectIQ data fields from your Garmin device. After removing non-Xert ConnectIQ data fields, try rebooting the device and then launching the Xert Workout Player

Unfortunately not. The Garmin ConnectIQ system does not allow you to run a ConnectIQ app, like the Xert Workout Player, while simultaneously recording an activity.

If you need navigation during an outdoor ride, we recommend using the Xert ConnectIQ data fields to monitor your Xert data while taking full advantage of routing & other data fields.

You can download the Xert data fields for your compatible Garmin devices from the ConnectIQ store here.

Alternatively, you can export the recommended training directly to Garmin Connect & use the native Garmin interface. For more information on that, check out our support article, here.

Important note: In order to get these reports posted automatically to your Strava account, you need to verify that your activity goes from the recording source (Garmin, Wahoo, Zwift, etc.) to Xert first, and then let Xert push the activity to Strava with the report & training summary.

If your activities are pushed to Strava from another platform before Xert, you won’t be able to get the Training Report Image and Text Summary posted automatically. You may need to disable the automatic sync to Strava from other apps for this feature to work effectively.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Enable Report Syncing in Xert

Before your workout data can be sent to Strava, ensure that you have enabled the necessary settings in Xert.

From the Xert homepage, navigate to Sync > Strava and make sure the option to ‘Show Reports and Training Summary Data on Strava‘ is enabled, like seen below.

You will also need to verify that the option to ‘Sync New Xert Activities to Strava‘ is also enabled:

2. Recording your Activity

When you record your workouts using your training device, ensure the following:

Garmin Devices: First, you should link your Xert account to Garmin via the Sync > Garmin Connect page. Activities recorded using your Garmin devices will then be automatically pushed to Xert for post-ride or post-run analysis.

Wahoo Devices: Once you’ve linked your Xert account to your Wahoo account, activities recorded from your Wahoo devices will be pushed automatically to Xert for analysis.

Hammerhead Devices: You can link your Hammerhead account to Xert from the dashboard, under the Connected Accounts section. Activities recorded using the EBC app on Karoo devices will be uploaded directly to Xert for analysis. Activities recorded using Karoo’s native interface will be uploaded to Hammerhead and automatically synced to Xert.

Zwift: Once you’ve linked your Zwift account and Xert from the Sync > Zwift page, your completed rides in Zwift will be automatically synced to Xert.

Note: Zwift will only sync activities that are at least 2km in length

3. How Reports Appear in Strava

Once the above steps are completed and your activity is uploaded to Xert, Xert will generate a workout report and training summary. When Xert pushes your activity to Strava, the training summary and Forecast AI Report will automatically appear in your activity’s notes & media!

• The Training Summary will display key metrics from your workout or activity: XSS, Difficulty Score, estimated Fat & Carb utilization, etc.

• The Forecast AI Report will display information about your training plan, the Low, High, & Peak XSS achieved (versus the targets), as well as the difficulty score and your estimated time for red or yellow status. The report will also provide an MPA chart for the activity with HR overlaid.

Important Notes

Syncing Limitations: The automatic syncing process will only send new activities from Xert to Strava. However, you can force Xert to re-sync an activity to Strava by downloading the activity file, deleting it from Xert, & re-uploading the activity file.

Editing Activity Names: You can rename your activity in Xert and the title will be automatically updated in Strava. However, renaming your activity on Strava may not sync back to the activity in Xert.

Troubleshooting

If you do not see your training summary and training report images appearing on Strava:

Check Your Sync Settings: Ensure that all settings are correctly configured as mentioned above.

Verify Activity Uploads: Confirm that your activity was successfully uploaded to Xert first, and then to Strava. If the activity was pushed to Strava from another platform, we aren’t able to add a training summary & workout report image.

Manually Download your Report: You can generate a Breakthrough or Workout Report image manually by opening the Activity Details page for the workout/breakthrough activity in Xert and clicking on the Breakthrough or Workout Report icon (shown below). You can then upload the image directly to your Strava activity or post on your socials, for example.

While longer efforts are often never easy or moderate even, Xert bases the Difficulty Rating on the highest Difficulty Score achieved in the activity. Difficulty Score increases with sustained high intensity efforts, particularly when under high fatigue (lowered MPA). These are not likely to occur in longer efforts, or if they do, they are early in the ride when you are fresher and able to produce greater power. As you accumulate longer term fatigue due to the length of a longer ride, it becomes harder to raise your Difficulty Score due to the inability to sustain high intensity efforts very long. Consider the Difficulty Rating a reflection of the intensity and not the length of the ride.

Your Training Load is calculated using a exponentially weighted moving average. For those unfamiliar with what this means, your Training Load is similar to your average daily XSS .. but not exactly .. let’s see if we can help the understanding of what this means.

Let’s say, for example, you start doing workouts with 50 XSS every day. Your average daily XSS is therefore 50. If you hadn’t been doing any training previously, i.e. your Training Load started at 0, and will start to rise with each activity you do. Eventually, if you do 50 XSS workouts every day long enough, your Training Load will be 50. XATA will show a deficit of 50 every day before your workout and 0 after you complete it.

But, what if you did just one 350 XSS activity once a week, and didn’t do the workout on the same day every week. Your average daily XSS is still 50 (350/7 days) and if you did one 350 XSS activity once a week long enough, your Training Load will eventually be 50. What is different though is that XATA, needs to calculate a daily XSS deficit/surplus and can only look at when you did your last workout to determine what your deficit should be. If the last time you did a workout was last Thursday and today is Wednesday, mathematically, you don’t have a deficit yet. XATA expects you to do workouts on the same day-of-the-week. If you happen to do a small workout today and get a surplus of 50 XSS, you will still get a deficit tomorrow since that’s when you did your workout the previous week. XATA looks at what you did the previous week.

Both of these are extreme examples but illustrate the point that what XATA needs to do isn’t so simple – most everyone doesn’t train with consistency, either every day or the same amount every week. XATA needs to base recommendations on what you did the previous week, based on exactly when you did them, so that deficits can be properly calculated. XATA does some additional calculations to lessen big fluctuations but still needs to account for what you did the previous week so that progressive overload can be sustained, according to your chosen improvement rate.

If you are seeing a big jump in your XSS Deficit, check your previous week. There is likely a big XSS activity you performed around the same time.

Sometimes you may notice a discrepancy between a calculation made on a mobile app (Garmin, Xert for iOS, Xert for Android) and the Xert Online web app. This is often attributable to a difference in the fitness signature used in the calculation, where the server will update the signature after the activity is analyzed and may use a new fitness signature. This can happen more frequently with the Garmin apps as their fitness signature used in the calculation can get stale if not updated during their initialization. Sometimes errors can creep into the power data too that gets fixed by the server and not by the apps. Finally, sometimes it’s from minor mathematical differences between the platforms that can occur. In general, if the signatures that are used are close and the errors are not major, the differences should not be material.

How trained are you? This is the number of stars.

How much training and what type of training have you be doing recently? This the colour of the stars.

Many new to Xert that have uploaded some history often find that their daily Training Status and Fitness Planner statuses consistently show them as Very tired when in fact they have more capacity to train and don’t require recovery. There are several common causes for this:

There isn’t sufficient recent data in the system, or

There are invalid/major gaps in your training history, or

You have many older activities without power data.

In each of these situations, Xert thinks you’re less trained that you actually are. The number of stars / Training Load total is not reflective of your real amount of training capacity. This leads to the system thinking your recent training is more than you are capable of handling and your Training Status moves to Very tired.

For example, if you have been training for an average of 1 hour/day on a consistent basis for a number of months, you would roughly expect to have a Training Load of 60 and have just over 2 stars of Training Status. If you have less than 1 star, there is likely missing data from your data history in Xert. Xert will think you are less fresh than you actually are.

Xert works best when you have contiguous activities without gaps in your history, with power data (or manually entered XSS). If you have incorrect gaps or many activities without power data or XSS assigned, your current Training Load will be underestimated.

How Do I Fix This?

If you have activities with gaps before or after that are invalid, remove them. If you have many of these activities, use the Activities Table to select them and delete them in bulk (this is much more efficient). You should have a solid block of activities before today that correctly reflect your recent training history. Having a contiguous, correct block of training before today allows the system to estimate your Starting Training Load, which is the Training Load assigned to your very first activity in the system. If you have an activity or more in the distant past with large gaps, the system’s estimate will not work correctly.

To fine tune things even further, you can update your Starting Training Load value under My Fitness / Advanced tab which assigns your Training Load for your very first activity.
We encourage you to reach out to your bike computer, watch or PC software vendor and request that you’d like to see the Xert metrics on their units/systems. Many vendors are in the planning stages of implementing Xert support and will prioritize their roadmap based on demand.

In general, you should not add activities other than cycling to your cycling profile. This is because the XSS you input from other activities will get applied to predictions and, for most activities, the benefit they provide to your cycling fitness isn’t easily measured. If you’d like to keep a record of what you’ve done in other sports, you can log them using the Fitness Planner but be sure NOT to assign an XSS value to them.

To account for the effects from other activities that can influence your training, use the Freshness Feedback feature to adjust for any additional tiredness you may feel from other activities to ensure that the recommendations of the Xert Adaptive Training Advisor accounts for these effects by delaying some workouts until you fully recover.

Deep Dive

Put simply, Xert quantifies the training you are doing from your power data, and can use this information to predict your future fitness and to recommend what training you should do. It uses this data to calculate your Training Load as well as your Recovery Load. Together they are used to determine if you are fresh or tired and what type of training you are able to do at a given time. This is where having multiple sports represented in your cycling profile can be problematic; the Training Loads and Recovery Loads from one sport do not necessarily apply to another sport equally so the advice you get on what training you should be doing isn’t going to be correct.

To illustrate, one could argue based on anecdotal evidence alone, that 2-hours of cross-country skiing might benefit your cycling. By how much? How about the recovery demands afterwards? We know that specificity reigns when it comes to training. This means that to improve cycling, you need to ride your bike. At this time there is very little scientific data available to suggest how much training benefits from one sport is transferable to another sport.

So, for these reasons, you should keep your sports separate.

Running Power

If you’re running with a run power meter, like a Stryd, let us know at support@xertonline.com. We can help you set up a second account to manage your run data separately.
