Training Load & Training Status Explained

How Xert interprets your training volume and fatigue.

Xert looks at how much strain (XSS) you’ve applied to each of your three systems over the last several weeks to months and uses this to determine both:

  • Training Load – your long-term fitness
  • Training Status – your short-term fatigue

Quick Summary

  • Training Load reflects how much training you’ve done and how fit you’ve become.
  • Training Status shows how fatigued you are right now based on recent strain.
  • Training is tracked across the three systems: Low, High, Peak.
  • Your Training Status colour guides the intensity you’re most ready for.
  • You may not always “feel” your colour — Status is data-based, not perception-based.

Training Load: Your Fitness Over Time

Training Load is Xert’s way of measuring how much you’ve been training and how that work has built your long-term fitness. It also shows which systems you’ve been stressing most. As your training volume increases and decreases throughout the year, you might notice the number of stars in your profile increase or decrease, corresponding with your changes in training. The more you ride/train, the more stars you’ll accumulate in your profile.

Just like your fitness signature & XSS, your Training Load is divided into three:

  • Low Training Load – XSS placed on your Threshold system (almost all riding contributes here)
  • High Training Load – XSS on your HIE system (efforts well above Threshold)
  • Peak Training Load – XSS on your Peak Power system (sprints & explosive efforts)

Higher Training Load = higher fitness in that system and greater durability to handle more work over time.

Training Status: How Tired You Are

Training Status is Xert’s estimate of how fatigued you are based on recent strain across your Low, High, and Peak systems.

It is shown using three colours:

  • Blue (Fresh) — all systems are fresh enough to train; high-intensity is often recommended.
  • Yellow (Tired) — High & Peak systems are fatigued; endurance is recommended.
  • Red (Very Tired) — your Low system is fatigued; active recovery or rest recommended.

Important: Training Status is based on your power data from recent activities, not how you feel. You may feel fresh even when Xert marks you Yellow or Red or vice versa – this is normal. It’s also common to return directly to ‘Fresh’ status from ‘Very Tired’ if most of your recent activities have been low-intensity rides.

Next: Athlete Types

Now that you understand how Xert interprets your fitness and fatigue over time, the final step in the Discover pillar is learning how Xert identifies what kind of rider you wish to become through Athlete Types.

Athlete Types help Xert understand your riding strengths and shape recommendations that align with the demands of your preferred activities or races.
